The Family Dynamics of Wedding Planning

Wedding planning may be one of the most complex logistical and interpersonal activities in your life… and possible the most stressful…

The First Dance is a program,...  no, more than a program...    the beginning of a dialogue that can help couples (and their parents) navigate the most stressful decisions of wedding planning!

Sept 5    6:45-8:45 pm.  XXXXXXXXXXLibrary

FREE: The First Dance (video)  presentation with facilitated discussion by Certified Family Life Educators:

q       So many decisions… so many people.

q       Whose wedding is it anyway?  It’s our wedding, so we’ll do it our way…

q       It’s our wedding and you’re an important part of it, so let’s figure it out together.

q       Dealing with differences with your families without going crazy!

q       Negotiating differences with your parents.

q       Negotiating differences across families.  Clash of wedding traditions!

New possibilities open up to learn life-long lessons about teamwork under stress, relationships with parents and siblings and in-laws, and about the dynamics of extended families. Couples who have taken the program report less stress in the months leading up to their wedding, more ability to handle the pressures as they come, and more wisdom to carry over to their marriage.

The First Dance was created by a father-daughter team: Bill Doherty, PhD, a nationally recognized marriage expert and family therapist, and Elizabeth Doherty Thomas, a recent bride.       When Elizabeth went searching for wedding guidance, she came across online communities of brides… she began to believe maybe many brides (and grooms) did not understand the complexities of family dynamics and friendship loyalties in wedding planning, leading them to make mistakes especially with their families that could plague them for years into their marriage. Elizabeth would share these stories with her father, who offered insights from a marriage and family therapy perspective.  Out of these conversations between father and daughter, the idea for The First Dance was born. The First Dance supports everyone, not just the bride or the couple; we are sensitive to the stresses and deep emotions that affect everyone in wedding planning. We are a new voice in how to work with, not against, your loved ones and friends while planning a wedding and launching a successful, lifelong marriage.

Testimonial:  "I knew how to pick a caterer and florist and plan the event, but your program really helped when we got to the nitty-gritty details and had problems with the people in our lives. There is no other help out there for dealing with the people."                                         -         Amy, a newlywed
