Why Marriage Mentors are a key element to effective Marriage Ministry:

They:

Are Effective: Marriage Mentors trained to use a Relationship Inventory such as FOCCUS/REFOCCUS or PREPARE/ENRICH along with learned relationship skills and their own marriage experience has proven to be very effective for both preparation and enrichment.

Save time for Pastor:  Marriage counseling, premarital or problem, has become a significant part of most pastor's duties. Under the pastor's supervision, mentors can perform many of the premarital preparation previously performed by clergy AND they do it effectively.  Clergy may also be able to refer certain couples needing help to the well trained, more experienced Mentors. Pastoral oversight and training helps to insure that more complex issues are referred to professionals.

Build Community and Accountability, both are important elements in a strong marriage program.  Recent research has indicated that some marriage skills education programs are more effective when led by laity in congregations rather than mental health professionals.

Create environment of openness and acceptance in a congregation.  Because mentors are trained and encouraged to be open and vulnerable with their own marriage challenges, the couple being helped is more likely to be open and honest with their need for growth.  This level of self disclosure would not be appropriate for clergy or professionals.  And, because a number of couples are being open and honest about their own relationships, it encourages those experiencing difficulties to come for help.

Make a public statement of the importance of strong marriages in your church and community. By involving mature, more experienced couples in your marriage ministry not only are their marriages enriched, but it makes a strong statement to others.

Are an opportunity to enrich mature couples who mentor others.  Mentors consistently report that this is the most fulfilling ministry in which they have been involved.

Are an effective Strategy for Church Growth and Evangelism.  Many churches with Marriage Mentor Programs report that as couples come to be married, they develop a relationship and connection to God and others through their mentors and are touched by the mentor's testimony.
